Tormentula

A curious band. While their image appears to show three girls dressed for a Halloween party, music itself becomes aggressive. This seems to be one of the main features of Tormentula, mixing humor with aggressiveness, also present in their lyrics. Their style is often medially associated with the black metal label, although approaching a punkish doom/death metal.

The band kick off was in 1997 without any claim as a gathering of friends. They tried with different covers but neither seemed to bear fruit until they saw the light with their first song “Corn Cob”.

Their vocalist Alice cites influences such diverse as Emperor, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Venom and Mercyful Fate. Actually their sound is no less confusing. This was no handicap to get a recording contract with Speakeasy Records, born recently with only two bands in their roster, which released their LP “Submit Your Unworthy Soul” in 1999.

The record had some local impact, which did not prevent the record label from traversing economic problems and eventually disappeared. The album gave Tormentula a certain reputation that made them open for Today’s The Day and Anal Cunt.

“Lure Of The Grime”, published in 7″ red vinyl was the last work published by Tormentula.

They are still active but without plans to publish new material, switching from trio to quintet after adding Glare Rivets on bass, and the first male foray Blasphemor Lord.

Lineup:
Alice Bludgeon – Drums, vocals
Manerva Scurvy – Guitar, vocals
Dr. Morticia Mangle – Bass
Glare Rivets – Bass, vocals
Lord Blasphemor – Guitar

2000, “Lure Of The Grime” (7″)

Together they started touring around the Swiss, French and Austrian scenarios. They already recorded in 2006 which is their only album to date “Oceans Of Illusions”, an album that offers pure Doom, a-la-My Dying Bride. An album with very good sound although being self-made, funny, oppressive, slow, heavy, intriguing and interesting.

Alternating melodic vocals, ragged, guttural (their best), the album runs through the dark terrains of the genre, with songs that make long and slow journeys (actually 6 songs fill 55 minutes).

In August 2007 Sarah replaced the former drummer Melanie, with whom ShEver toured Germany and Switzerland to present their album.

Already in 2009, ShEver returned with a four-track EP, titled “A Dialogue With The Dimensions”.

Jessica – Guitar, vocals
Nadine – Bass, violin, vocals

Biografía:
Gallhammer was born in 2002 in the Vivian Slaughter’s mind, who wanted to form a band based in the atmosphere and darknes of Hellhammer.

The remaining components, Reaper and Mika joined Vivian in 2003, even they didn’t know how to play their instruments, as both had been vocalists in their former bands.

Vivian was the vocalist in a grindcore act and had played the saxophone in a noise band. Risa sang in a group of Avant-garde, and Mika sang in a rock band. In March 2003, Gallhammer had already recorded a tape, whith only 30 copies given as gifts in their debut gig at Koiwa Death Fest. In these first concerts Gallhammer included in the setlist Hellhammer and Amebix songs, the main influences of the trio.

Only a few months later, in July, the group released their demo “Gallhammer” which perfectly reflected the vision of what Vivian had wanted from the band, and captured the essence of despair, emptiness, obsession with life, and observation of negative feelings.

It was followed by the demo “Endless Nauseous Days” in 2004. After it Gallhammer started to think about recording their first LP, released this same year under the name of “Gloomy Lights”, eight tracks that reflected the best of their previous material. Before that they had won fans and experience as they headlined the “Aloof and Proud Silence vol.1 y vol.2″ gigs in several Japanese cities.

After traveling around Tokyo in 2005, in 2006 finally came the contract with Peaceville Records. With the contract it came “The Dawn Of ..” a compilation that included a DVD with a show in Okayama and several home videos of gigs in Tokyo.

The debut album in Peaceville, “Ill Innocence”, was released in the middle of 2007, after which Gallhammer went to tour Europe. As a result, it was released a DVD entitled “Ruin Of A Church,” recorded at Colchester Arts Center, a venue located in a church in ruins.

Mythic

Mythic is probably the best known all-female death metal band. Dana Duffey joined Mary Bielich (bass) and Terri Heggen (drums) in Pittsburg with the intention of becoming Derkéta’s fourth member.

Origin: United States
History: 1991 – 1993

Style: Death, Doom Metal

Biography:
Mythic is probably the all-female death metal best known band. Dana Duffey joined Mary Bielich (bass) and Terri Heggen (drums) in Pittsburg with the intention of becoming Derkéta’s fourth member.

What Dana did not know was that the journey was going to be better than expected because he found Derkéta about to disappear as a band. Since then, Dana, Mary and Terri decided to stablish the groundwork for Mythic, a band whose style can be framed between doom and death metal.

Once settled in the city of Pennsylvania, the trio began writing material, Dana added his lyrics and his possessed voice possessed. In one month they had created “The Destroyer”, “Scarred For Life” and “Grind Grimoire”, recorded on tape, with just 250 copies released.

They had few material recorded but started playing in the American East Coast, whose concerts were used to release the live demo “The Immortal Realm”, which contained six items and had a certain impact.

Only a year after its formation, and because Relapse Records were located in their native Pennsylvania, Mythic signed a contract to release their EP, “Mourning In The Winter Solstice”, published in various formats.

The album received good reviews, and predicted a good career for the deathmetaler trio. However, the problems came immediately. The drummer Terri Heggen leaves the formation, and after the Milwaukee Metalfest VI Dana Duffey creates her Black Metal act “Demonich Christ,” still active nowadays.

The reasons for their split are not clear. What is clear is that it wasn’t an amicable separation, because years later, in 2004, they didn’t agree in the release of a compilation record that almost didn’s see the light, with all the parts of the conflict facing the court. It must be added the rumor about Dana Duffey’ xenophobia, fueled by her former colleagues in various interviews where they called her racist.

There’s no doubt that the origin of these allegations is the interview in which Dana replied to the question: “If there’s one thing you could change about the world, right now, what would it be and why?” with the controversial “I’d get rid of all the niggers and spics. It would have the domino effect of removing many of the world’s problems.”

Dana has also defended the artists right to freely express what they think in the interviews, even the opinions are racist or fascist.

The bassist Mary Bielich continued active in groups such as November’s Doom, Em Sinfonia and the current Penance.

Lineup:
Mary Bielich – Bass
Dana Duffey – Guitar, vocals
Terri Heggen – Drums

1992, “The Immortal Realm” (live demo)
1993, “Mourning in the Winter Solstice” (EP)
